Mortenson Construction is in the catbird seat to get the general contractor/construction manager contract for the N160 Sound Transit Northgate Station, elevated guideway and parking garage project.

The construction budget is $160 million.

Mortenson was awarded 849 points in a competition with two joint-venture teams that were scored on: proposals, interviews and pricing based on GC/CM fee, negotiated self-perform fee, and general conditions costs.

The other teams were Kiewit in a joint venture with Hoffman Construction (832 points) and Stacy and Witbeck in a joint venture with Atkinson Construction (778).

The Sound Transit board in February will review a preconstruction contract for Mortenson.

Mortenson will then work with Jacobs for about a year on construction details and final designs. Mortenson will be able to self-preform up to 70 percent of the total construction cost.

Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2016 and finish in late 2019.

Hewitt is the station architect.

The N160 guideway will start near the Northeast 92nd Street tunnel portal and extend nearly a mile north along Interstate 5 to Northgate Mall. The elevated Northgate Station will be east of First Avenue Northeast, spanning Northeast 103rd Street. Its entrances will be on the Northgate Mall property north of 103rd and near the Northgate Transit Center south of 103rd.

The parking garage will have 450 stalls.

The N160 project is part of the $2.1 billion Northgate Link extension, which will be 4.3 miles of rail between the University of Washington and Northgate. The project will have 3.4 miles of twin bored tunnels with two underground stations in the University and Roosevelt districts. The line is expected to open in 2021.
