Construction began Monday on two new buildings in Renton for Group Health Cooperative.

Ryan Companies US of Minneapolis is the developer. The 12-acre site is part of the former Longacres race track property at Southwest 27th Street and Naches Avenue Southwest, and is near the new Sounder Rail Station.

Property records show an entity related to The Boeing Co. sold the land to an entity related to Ryan earlier this month for $13.3 million.

The buildings will total 240,000 square feet and are expected to open late next year.

About 1,000 people will work in the new complex, which will have space for administrative, lab, pharmacy and warehouse operations. The employees are now in a nearby building in Tukwila that Group Health has occupied since 1995, but the company said that space no longer meets its needs.

Group Health's administrative staff will continue to occupy other leased space in Tukwila, Seattle and throughout the state.

CollinsWoerman is the architect and Ryan is the general contractor. CBRE will provide construction and facilities management.

Ryan Companies US is a commercial real estate firm that provides design-build construction, development and management services. It recently announced it will expand into health care property.
