Project seeks to free the Yakima River, restore its natural flows and habitat

Looking at the Yakima River, which stretches some 214 miles from Keechelus Lake in the Cascades to the mouth of the Columbia River past Richland, an uninformed eye might think it's always looked that way. In reality, the flow of the river has been manipulated since the early 19th century, and possibly even before, by a series of man-made levees that have not only resulted in elevated flood risks for those living in the river's floodplain but have also disrupted its natural habitat and ecosystem.

Work is set to begin this year to restore over 380 acres of natural habitat below state Route 24.
