Barghausen Consulting Engineers, Inc., has welcomed five new employees and promoted three staff members internally since the start of September. The new hires include three survey team members, a new addition to the People and Culture team, and an architectural job captain. The promotions include a project engineer and two survey party chiefs. All the promoted and new employees are located out of the firm's Kent office.

New hire Kelsey Bruggman started at Barghausen on Sep. 26 as a talent acquisition specialist. Bruggman graduated from Washington State University with her bachelor's degree in human development with a minor in psychology, and a certificate in family studies. She previously worked as an HR specialist and a recruiter for a construction subcontractor. Her experience includes recruiting for positions across 12 branch locations.

Nicholas Hale joined Barghausen on Sept. 19 as a survey chainperson. Hale has previous experience in the survey field and has also worked as a construction worker for TD Construction, as well as working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a mechanical laborer. He graduated from Las Positas College with his associate of arts degree.

Stephen Ellis started at Barghausen on Sept. 12 as a survey chainperson. Ellis has previous experience working as a laborer and has a background in customer service. He also has a wide variety of knowledge with mechanical skills and trades.

Dustin Chesley joined the Barghausen team on Oct. 3, also as a survey chainperson. Chesley previously worked in both warehousing and manufacturing environments, as well as subcontracting with over 20 years of experience. He has several field certifications.

Harold French joined Barghausen on Oct. 31 as a job captain in the architecture department. French graduated from Green River college and has over 31 years of experience in a variety of different construction backgrounds, with his main passion being architecture.

The three promoted team members are Steven Reed, Yaughn Deardorff and Leo Erolin.

Reed joined the Barghausen team in 2020 and has developed into a well-rounded engineer, taking a leading role with some of the firm's biggest clients and most complex projects. He has technical excellence and has taken the lead on developing key management tools to ensure consistent quality control and task management.

Deardorff started at Barghausen in February of 2017. He has worked with several party chiefs over the years, proving himself to be knowledgeable and proficient in field survey work.

Erolin joined Barghausen in June of 2014 after starting his surveying journey in Hawaii. There, he worked alongside his father and uncle, both professional surveyors running their family's business. Over the last eight years Erolin has performed multiple roles at Barghausen, working both in the field and in the office.

Arcadis IBI Group announced the expansion of its Seattle architecture practice with the hiring of three new team members, Matthias Olt, Heather Hayes, and Melissa Fedorchenko. These new team members share expertise in the design of urban mixed-use and tall buildings. In addition, they specialize in design for complex inner-city projects, sustainability, and biophilia.

Olt joins the practice as an associate director – principal, architecture and will serve as the firm's Living+ lead, i.e., high-rise mixed-use, for the Seattle market. Olt brings more than 30 years of experience in architecture, design leadership, and sustainability. He has led the design of several high-profile mixed-use, residential, and commercial towers in the USA, Asia, MENA, and Europe. In 2022, he received an Innovation by Design Award from Fast Company for a use-neutral and adaptable building design. In 2017, under Arcadis CRTKL, he received an AIA Seattle Honors Award for the design of a conceptual mass timber tower in Seattle.

Olt is also an educator and architecture critic at Washington State University. In his new Living+ role with Arcadis IBI Group he will lead the design and implementation of residential, hospitality, and office mixed-use buildings.

Hayes is the firm's new regional leader of interior design and will provide strategic leadership for the company's interior design team across the US, with a special focus on Living+. In her nearly two decades as an interior designer, Hayes has worked on a diverse range of project types and scales, and she continues to serve on the Interior Design Advisory Board for Bellevue College. Her work includes award winning projects in hospitality, multi-family housing, and workplace.

Fedorchenko recently joined the team as an associate – interior design. She will be part of the interior design team, providing design leadership to projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. Fedorchenko brings with her over 15 years of design experience for a wide array of clients, most recently working within the multi-family housing sector in the Seattle area. She is also a professional mentor for local high school students.

Snohomish-based Cyemptive Technologies is the recipient of ten 2022 ‘ASTORS' Homeland Security Awards from American Security Today - more than any other company at this year's competition. Cyemptive won for its cybersecurity solutions that are guaranteed to protect computing environments before or immediately following a compromise. American Security Today's annual ‘ASTORS' Awards recognizes industry leaders in a variety of areas, including physical and border security, cybersecurity, emergency preparedness - management and response, law enforcement, first responders, as well as federal, state and municipal government agencies in the acknowledgment of their efforts to keep the nation secure. Cyemptive handles threat elimination by keeping systems in known and predictable states while constantly and automatically removing threats. Cyemptive won five Platinum Awards, two Gold Awards, two Silver Awards and one Bronze Award. Founded in 2014, Cyemptive's leadership team is comprised of executives from several of the world's technology and security organizations, including the former CIO of Microsoft and the former chief computer architect for the National Security Agency. American Security Today is a digital media platform in the U.S. Homeland Security and public safety industry, focused on breaking news and in-depth coverage of the newest initiatives and technologies in physical & IT security.

Madrona Prize

Madrona awarded the 15th Annual Madrona Prize to the University of Washington's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering team working on the VOCAL system. VOCAL (Video Organization and Interactive Compositional AnaLytics) system enables users to extract semantic information from large quantities of unlabeled data without pre-trained models. VOCAL helps users organize their data, build domain-specific models as they go, and then search for interesting events. Ph.D. students Maureen Daum, Enhao Zhang, and Dong He worked together on the two VOCAL sub-projects that received the prize: Video Organization and Exploration and video search technology called Interactive Video Analytics for Compositional Queries. They were co-advised by Professor and Director Magda Balazinsk and Professor Ranjay Krishna, and they also worked with a collaborator (and Allen School graduate) from Microsoft, Brandon Haynes. Madrona is a venture capital firm based in Seattle, and has been investing in early-stage technology companies for more than 25 years.

Seattle Job Fair

CareerTown.net, Champions Of Diversity, and Choice Career Fairs have partnered to present a multimedia job fair that provides recruiters and job seekers with the latest in social networking communications and online recruitment technology along with the multicultrual network of Champions of Diversity and CareerTown.net's virtual events technology. Low Income Housing Institute

From October 30th to November 14th, The Low Income Housing Institute held its annual Gala & Auction virtually. LIHI raised over $430,000 for Tiny Houses & Urban Rest Stops, a direct service programs to benefit the daily lives of people experiencing homelessness in our region.

LIHI develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state.

Mockingbird Society

The Mockingbird Society board of directors named Natalie Lente its executive director, effective Monday, November 28. As a nonprofit executive with experience in both Washington state community agencies and local government, Lente will work to advance The Mockingbird Society's mission of transforming the foster care system and ending youth homelessness. Most recently, Lente served as the chief external affairs officer at Child Care Resources, leading the agency's policy/advocacy, fundraising, public partnerships, and communications work. She was formerly the health services administrator for the Health Care for the Homeless Network at Public Health – Seattle & King County. Lente succeeds interim executive director Peter Bloch Garcia, who assumed the role in 2021. For over 20 years, Mockingbird has created, supported, and advocated for racially equitable, healthy environments that develop and empower young people who have experienced —or are experiencing—foster care or homelessness.

GOLFTEC

GOLFTEC is opening a new training center located at 3815 S Steele St. Suite H, Tacoma. The new center will feature a vibrant interior, putting green for TECPUTT lessons and the latest teaching technology. The new Tacoma Center will also offer club fitting and sales. GOLFTEC's golf club fitting system matches ideal clubs and shafts to your swing, with equipment available for purchase directly from GOLFTEC. In addition to indoor services, GOLFTEC offers outdoor and on-course golf lessons.

City of Tacoma

The city of Tacoma is accepting Tacoma Artists Initiative Program (TAIP) funding applications from eligible Tacoma artists, working in all artistic disciplines including but not limited to literary, performing, digital, new media, film, visual, and interdisciplinary arts. TAIP funding supports artists in creating new work and growing their skills. Fundees must share their art or artistic practice with the residents of Tacoma through a free public component. Artists selected for funding will each receive $4,000 to support their work and will have until December 31, 2024 to complete their project. Applications must be submitted online by January 23, 2023. Eligibility extends to individual artists who are residents of Tacoma, are practicing artists dedicated to producing artwork on a regular basis, and are at least 18 years of age. Artists who have received TAIP funding in 2021 - 2022 are not eligible to apply. Funding for TAIP is determined through a competitive application process. Hermanson Co.'s ownership group expanded to include 10 new members — all current employees, representing a range of administrative and craft labor leadership across multiple disciplines and services. They are: Neil Ammentorp, chief operations officer; Eddie Baker, Highrise, Hospitality & Office Group construction executive; Chris Howard, sheet metal general superintendent; Scott Ponsler, director of labor; Anthony Rogers, plumbing general superintendent; Kyle Rogers, Tech Campus Group leader; Scott Sinclair, Critical Environments Group leader; Mike Stedman, fitting general superintendent; Matt Thibeau, Tech Major Projects Group leader; and Eric van der Veen, Highrise, Hospitality & Office Group leader. PCL Construction

PCL Construction's Seattle office is celebrating its 30th year as a general contractor in the Pacific Northwest. In that time, the firm has completed over $7 billion in work, including the IDX Tower, Bell Harbor International Conference Center and Spire condo tower in Seattle, as well as Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett and Bravern Signature Residences in Bellevue. Its first local project was the McNeil Island Correction Facility. Looking ahead, the company was recently awarded the Clackamas County Circuit Courthouse project, Oregon's first county courthouse delivered through a public-private partnership. PCL says it wants to do more of these P3 projects, as well as those using mass timber. Tyler Kautz is the district manager.

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington has three new members: Tenna LLC of Seattle; NW Cascade/Honey Bucket of Puyallup; and Ryan, Swanson and Cleveland PLLC of Seattle. Tenna provides construction management software, focusing on asset and equipment management, maintenance and dispatching, and dash cams. NW Cascade/Honey Bucket provides portable toilets, comfort stations, fencing, storage containers and portable offices. Ryan, Swanson and Cleveland is a full-service law firm representing businesses and individuals in a range of practice areas including construction law, employment rights, and benefits and labor.
