Environmental agency practices what it preaches

  • The Pierce County Environmental Services Building captures natural light and features "chimneys" that draw warm air up to be released.

    The building presents a monumental face from the shore side. The 20-foot-long overhang was modeled by the Lighting Lab to keep excess sunlight out of workstations.

    It’s easy to concentrate in the small library at the new Pierce County Environmental Services Building, surrounded by the soft glow of screened daylight and the sounds of many small vents opening and closing. The creaking and blowing of a natural ventilation system makes for a peaceful environment. It’s a quiet noise, like the sounds of nature itself.
