Project of the Month: Modern building set inside a treasured shell

  • In a slightly uncanny but pleasant way, standing inside the UW’s Savery Hall feels like being in a spaceship from the future that has landed inside a Collegiate Gothic shell.

    Savery Hall is a member of the UW’s Collegiate Gothic collection. In the most recent renovation, the interior is almost completely revised while the outer shell is preserved.

    For a few decades now, the Collegiate Gothic heart of the University of Washington campus has gotten not just nostalgic nods, but tangible respect. In plans for the future, there's a central role for historic preservation and restoration of the beloved masonry and stone veneers, highlighted by terra cotta figures and filigree of the “Quad” buildings and others.
