Thirteen communities won 2019 Smart Communities Awards from the state Department of Commerce. Smart Vision Award winners were the cities of Prosser and Lakewood. This award recognizes outstanding comprehensive plans, sub-area plans or county-wide planning policies. Smart Choices Awards went to Island County and the cities of Blaine and Vancouver. This award recognizes excellence in implementation of a comprehensive plan. Smart Projects Award winners were Intercity Transit and the city of Bellingham. They were cited for outstanding projects in the implementation of a comprehensive plan. Smart Partnership Awards went to the cities of Walla Walla, Colville, Tukwila and their partners. This award recognizes achievements by a joint public project that implements a comprehensive plan. Smart Housing Strategies Award winners were Island County and the city of Tacoma. They were cited for creative plans, policies, programs and/or actions to address affordable housing. The city of Bonney Lake won the Judges' Merit Award for its watershed protection policies and land use planning.
