Preserving Memorial Stadium's legacy — and its concrete

  • Along with other measures, crews crushed and processed parts of the old stadium for backfill on site, saving around $780,000, reducing the project's carbon footprint, and linking the new stadium with its past.

    Crews removed the final grandstand column in November, crane picking about 40 pieces of concrete from the grandstand, and carefully avoiding neighboring McCaw Hall.

    Seattle Public Schools' 1947-era Memorial Stadium is being replaced with a new 6,500-seat stadium — but the old stadium isn't really gone. Crews took some unique measures to preserve the building's legacy, and its concrete.
