City tries less toxic pipe type

  • Switching from PVC pipe to one made from HDPE cost a little more, but performance will be significantly higher, said one official.

    Seattle Parks and Recreation recently canceled an order for PVC pipe, opting for a less toxic alternative.

    The department was set to buy 34,000 feet of PVC pipe for a drainage project at Magnuson Park, but after comparing costs and benefits, officials decided to go with pipe made from the plastic HDPE, or high-density polyethylene.
