State to pay $40M to Narrows bridge planner

TACOMA (AP) -- The state transportation secretary has agreed to pay nearly $40 million, under certain conditions, to the company that has been overseeing planning for a second Tacoma Narrows bridge.

The money would compensate United Infrastructure Washington and its subcontractors for work already done. It also would settle any potential dispute between the company and the state if the Legislature decides to change the original contract with the company, Secretary Doug MacDonald said.
