U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed Department of Corrections Secretary Cheryl Strange to the National Institute of Corrections Advisory Board. The 16-member board sets policy and develops long-term plans for the National Institute of Corrections and is made up of private sector, local law enforcement, state corrections officials and federal administrators. The NIC provides guidance to local and state governments, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, other federal agencies and the U.S. Congress. Its primary goal is to raise the standards and performance of corrections agencies nationwide. After a career as a public servant that has spanned more than 40 years, Strange plans to retire next year. She joined DOC as secretary in 2021 after serving four years as secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services. Prior to that, she was the CEO of Western State Hospital. She has also worked as DOC's deputy secretary during a prior stint with the department, vice president of Pioneer Services and director of the Health Benefits Trust for SEIU 775. She has also served in many positions in Washington state government, appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee.


The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) added David Perez and Jennifer Roberts to its board of trustees. They join a group responsible for guiding the museum's strategic direction and providing oversight in collaboration with Scott Stulen, SAM's Illsley Ball Nordstrom director and CEO, and the museum's senior leadership. In addition, SAM's board appointed new leadership earlier this year. Catherine Roche has served on the board since 2013 and was elected president in January, and Scott Morris was elected chair in September. Perez is a trial lawyer at Perkins Coie who also maintains an active pro bono practice, supporting organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters, and the Ballard Food Bank. Roberts has been a proprietor of a small working farm and event space on Vashon Island for over a decade. In addition to her new appointment at SAM, she has served as a trustee for the Henry Art Gallery, On the Boards, and Holy Names Academy.
Bella Construction has opened a new operations center in Shoreline, according to company President Gary Brownlee. The office will provide project support to the clients, vendors and architects that Bella works with in the greater Seattle and surrounding areas. Marcelo Farfan will oversee the day-to-day interactions at the operations center. He has been with Bella Construction since 2012. Administrative services for Bella Construction will remain at the company's main office in Lakebay. Bella Construction is a full-service remodeling and general contracting firm, established in 1997.

Hensel Phelps has announced several promotions. Lars Swenson, Tyler Stumph and Lucien Sahali have been promoted to senior safety manager. Swenson has experience working on various projects with Sound Transit, Port of Seattle and Delta Air Lines. Stumph is working on the SEA Airport Delta Sky Club – Concourse A project. Sahali is providing safety leadership on the Alaska Airlines North Main Terminal Redevelopment at SEA Airport, ensuring passenger safety as the team renovates within the active ticketing lobby and baggage claim. Jason Jones has been promoted to the role of manager of supplier diversity, and works to ensure the success of small, minority and women-owned businesses on Hensel Phelps projects. And Darrin Nelson, with almost 20 years of experience in construction and utility safety, recently joined Hensel Phelps as a senior safety manager.
Jenny A. Durkan, former Mayor of Seattle and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, has joined International law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) as a partner in the firm's Financial Services Disputes and Investigations practice. She will have offices in Seattle and Washington DC and will lead the firm's US White Collar practice. Durkan served as Mayor of Seattle from 2017 to 2021. A nationally recognized lawyer with over 35 years of experience, Durkan is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. Her practice spans cyber law, crisis management, and high-stakes litigation, where she represents both public and private clients in navigating cybersecurity, national security, and regulatory challenges. She currently chairs the Washington State Bar Association task force on emerging technologies. Durkan served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington from 2009 to 2014, overseeing all federal prosecutions and representing the United States in civil matters. During her tenure, she chaired the Department of Justice's Subcommittee on Cybercrime, where she played a key role in revamping national strategies to detect and disrupt criminal and national security cyber threats. BCLP opened its Seattle office in 2023, later combining with Seattle firm Harrigan Leyh Farmer & Thomsen.

Industry veteran Eric Paulsen has been promoted to president of brokerage at Kidder Mathews, the firm recently announced. He'll now oversee some 500 West Coast brokers, from our state down to Arizona. Kidder's Bill Frame said in a statement, “This promotion marks an important step in our ongoing succession planning. Eric is an exceptional leader. His experience, positive personality, and drive to win make him the perfect fit to lead our growth and amplify our outstanding company culture.” Paulsen only joined the firm recently. He explained, “Three years ago, I joined Kidder Mathews because of its forward-thinking leadership, collaborative culture, and exceptional business platform. Now, I'm excited about the incredible opportunity to build on our momentum, working with teams across all services to drive even greater growth.”

He'll chat with Chris Hughes of JLL, Casey Trees from KBC Advisors and Brynn Telkamp of Be | Retail. Up for discussion, says NAIOP, is “How will work from home, high borrowing costs, and global economic pressures continue to impact the CRE market into 2025 and beyond?” We're guessing offices won't figure much in the conversation. At Basseti Architects, Susan Conway and Lydia Dominy Burns have been promoted to principal.
Conway has led the firm's design-chats since 2016. On top of leading several school projects, she also currently manages Studio Bassetti, staffing, and projects and is a trusted resource to her new and repeat clients. Studio Bassetti is a focused small-works studio of architects and interior designers in Seattle and Portland.
Dominy Burns is Bassetti's director of project management. She has helped the firm develop resources and tools that aspire to make projects more profitable and efficient. A leader within the Portland office, Dominy Burns has worked on some of the firm's largest and most complex projects, including Benson Polytechnic High School and Multiple Pathways to Graduation.
She has deep knowledge and interest in K-12 design and programming and is a long standing and active board member with A4LE, volunteers with SchoolsNEXT to mentor aspiring young architects, and recently became ALEP certified.


Patricia Culley and David Miller have each been promoted to principal at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
Before their promotions, they were both associate principals.
Miller is based in the firm's Seattle office and has been with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson for over 20 years. He has worked on several complex projects, succeeded in business development, secured new work, and nurtured firm culture.
After joining BCJ's San Francisco office in 2002, he migrated north to Seattle in 2003 and quickly became an integral part of the team working on the Grand Teton Discovery + Visitor Center. BCJ's longstanding relationship with Canadian timber fabricator Spearhead Timberworks began through working with Miller on the Teton Visitor Center and has since led to more than a dozen project collaborations.
Other of Miller's projects include the Whistler Residence, the Ae'o Tower on Hawaii, Tasman East in Santa Clara and a host of custom single-family residences, cultural and civic buildings, and mixed-use high rises. Current projects include new mixed-use and single-family residential buildings in Hawaii for JL Capital.
Culley is based in BCJ's Pittsburgh office. In the nearly two decades since she joined the firm, Culley has championed a holistic design ethos that balances integrity, sustainability, and beauty. She was honored with an AIA Young Architects Award in 2021.
Her project portfolio includes early design work on the California Institute of Technology's Schlinger Laboratory and Marquez Hall at the Colorado School of Mines, Carnegie Mellon University's ANSYS Hall, the Frick Environmental Center in Pittsburgh and projects with the University of Virginia and the ClearWater Conservancy.
Current projects include the net-zero ready, 180,000-square-foot Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale, PA.


Swinerton Incorporated announced the promotion of Chris Chany to vice president and director of corporate services. In his new role, Chany will support Swinerton’s commitment to providing exceptional client experiences and the continued growth and success of the national corporate services team. Chany has helped to grow Swinerton’s corporate services portfolio from $300 million to just over $1 billion in revenue in just four years. His ability to strategize with teams from pursuit through project execution and closeout has allowed Swinerton to solidify critical client relationships, generate repeat work, and seize growth opportunities.
Swinerton also announced that Luis Martinez will be joining its Seattle division as project executive. With over 25 years of industry experience, Martinez will lead all phases of preconstruction and construction from design to turnover. In addition, Martinez is part of the 2024 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Center for Leadership cohort and is earning a Lean Construction Institute (LCI)-Certified Practitioner Design (CPD) certification. He volunteers as a mentor for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), the University of Washington and the ACE Mentor Program.
