Transit oriented development, or TOD, has been fairly well incorporated into the lexicon of developers — so much so that I've gotten lazy about spelling out the acronym. (So, too, for SEDUs … but leave that for a another day.)
BRT, bus rapid transit, doesn't spill so easily off the tongue. Nor has it gotten the same attention from property shoppers intent on targeting future Sound Transit light rail stations across the Eastside. Many if not all of those future TOD sites are claimed, and prices keep rising. Hence the interest in BRTOD, if I may add more letters to the alphabet soup, which presents a quicker, cheaper alternative. Rail takes decades to develop; bus lanes are a matter of slapping down some yellow paint.
