Are all those long hours really profitable or just long?

  • "Going the extra mile" is an illusion for many companies. It looks and feels like an extra mile, but it is really the same mile traversed many times over.

    Fred was tired. "Whew, almost done and then I can head for home, have a shower, a snack, a little TV and get some sleep." Another 14-hour workday was drawing to a close. What gave Fred the enthusiasm to persist in his efforts was the boss’ words of encouragement three days earlier.

    "Fred you are doing a great job, an outstanding example for us -- keep it up." That had made Fred glow, for he aspired to be more than an associate. He hoped that the long hours he had put in during the past few years would pay off and he would soon be named a principal.
