Attention, shoppers! The list came out on Tuesday of grocery stores possibly to be shed as a result of the long-brewing merger between Albertsons (which owns Safeway and Haggen) and Kroger (owner of QFC, Fred Meyer and others). To gain possible approval from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the newly expanded list represents stores to be divested to C&S Wholesale Grocers of New Hampshire.
In theory, that might allay monopoly fears by creating a smaller but still competitive third-party chain. (The separate lawsuit to stop the nearly $25 billion merger, from our state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, we'll address far below.)
