Unborn children have rights, too.
While I'm certainly no legal historian, the fetal rights movement probably got a jumpstart from Roe v. Wade, which is the well-known U. S. Supreme Court case dealing with abortion. Recognizing the "important and legitimate interest in potential life," the justices ruled that a woman's right to privacy isn't absolute, and that states can pass laws regulating abortion once a fetus is "viable," or capable of meaningful life outside the mother's womb.
