Before the Great Recession, then as the market later rose until the pandemic slump, we saw money flowing into Belltown. Some developers reaped great rewards on the way out. There was a flurry of high-rise activity, prompted by new zoning, along Fourth and Fifth avenues. Third, Second and First saw less action, but with a few notable exceptions.
Other lots and parcels on the west edge of the neighborhood (aka the Regrade), have remained more stubbornly low-rise … or continued as parking lots. There are slabs of concrete where Mama's Mexican Kitchen, the Wayne Apartments and the IBEW union hall once stood. Building permits have been issued, while owners and developers sit on their hands — waiting for a more favorable market. No new money has ventured into those blocks of late. Sales are rare.
